Choosing The Best Pigtail For Your Needs

Fifteen years ago the only use of permanent remote connectors was on large expensive irrigation systems. The connectors were sold at very high prices because of their novelty. This has kept them from use in the smaller residential systems. Buying a great tool like a Rain Master Promax or TRC Sidekick to only use on a few large properties is a cost hard to justify for the smaller mostly residential contractor.

Remotepigtails.com is about changing that philosophy. Making a high end, long range, and durable remote a viable option on all irrigation systems regardless of size. The key to lowering cost has been to encourage volume purchasing and to come up with options that lower the cost of the connector itself. I'm still amazed at the difficulty some contractors have in installing and billing for a remote connector that costs about the same as a rotor or valve. Other contractors though hit the ground running and immediately see the advantages for both them in increased revenue and for the customer in greater work efficiency. As an example a market I had not anticipated but has found a great need for our products is the winterizing market. If a company can drop to a one man crew and still get the system winterized in the same amount of time at the same price then the pigtail has more than paid for itself. More than anything remotes are about lowering your labor costs.

So with that let me give a product guide based on lowering costs and ease of use.

MALE PIGTAILS. 30" long, 12, 24, 32 station versions.

By far the most popular pigtail is the male 30" version. It can hang down and easily be plugged directly into the remote. Using it with a PCC housing by removing the protective shell can give a much cleaner look in a high profile situation. With the Rain Master the M/F extension will be necessary if this is done. The drawbacks are appearance since the pigtail is hanging below the controller and the pins being exposed to insects and moisture in outdoor applications. For a controller inside the garage where appearance is not critical this is a great pigtail to use.

FEMALE PIGTAILS. 18" long 12, 24, 32 station versions.

These are offered for those who want a more discreet look and a more outdoor resistant connector. It does not hang down as far and requires the use of a M/M extension.

MC PIGTAILS. 15" long 12 station but can be stacked to expand beyond 12 stations.

If you have an MC cable for use on Rainbird MC controllers then you can expand its use with this cable on other non MC controllers. If you don't have an MC cable you might want to consider getting one just for the use of this cable. It is the low cost way to get all your controllers remote ready without having to carry multiple versions. In some cases its smaller size allows for tucking it behind the controller panel. If most or all your controllers are 12 stations or less then this is definitely the pigtail you want to use.

6 STATION PIGTAILS.

CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. For those who can't bring themselves to using a pigtail on a less then 6 station system then these can't be beat. Requires the use of a 9pin by 37 pin extension.

Get your customers remote ready and put that remote to use.
